This is the Zachary Font

This is the official site for the Zachary Font. The font author is yours truly, Edward Leach. There are lots of sites out there selling or offering the font for download. Some of them give me credit, some do not. I applied for a U.S. Copyright in 1993, and was granted a copyright in 1997. You can see the actual certificate here.

I created this font in 1992 using a Macintosh Classic computer with a nine inch monochrome screen. It was named after my son, and loosely based on his handwriting. He was seven or eight years old at the time.

In those days I worked for a company that printed T-shirts and other wearables. The company had just invested in a very expensive computer set-up to create designs for the silk screens. The system was a Macintosh computer, a large Texas Instruments laser printer and some specialty software.

The system worked great. The only problem was that we could only choose from a list of about 12 fonts. Then, I discovered shareware. It was a great way to get new software. Fonts were a popular item in the shareware world. Floppy disks, or later CDs were mailed to you, or sometimes inserted into magazines or books. People (not software companies) were putting their fonts out there in the world of sharing. Discs were also “shared” between friends.

The deal was, if after you tried the font and liked it and intended to use it, you would send the creator a nominal fee (usually five or ten dollars). Or if not, just remove the font from your computer. I believe a good percentage of shareware users actually paid for the products. Each font I received came with a “read-me.txt” file which contained the mailing address to send your payment. Of course there are always people that would take advantage of a developer and use the font without paying.

After a few months of using other people’s fonts, I decided to take a stab at it myself. The result was the Zachary Font. You can download the font here or get more information on the More page. You can download for free, then pay the shareware fee if you choose.
